Choosing The Best Bankruptcy Attorney

By Adela Beasley

Filing for bankruptcy and having a successful case is a hectic task. There are many people who are not able to pay their debts. This is usually blamed on the financial difficulties occasioned by a deteriorating economy world over. Bankruptcy attorneys are everywhere but for one to be able to get the best legal representation for their own case, choosing an ideal bankruptcy attorney is paramount.

State Bar Associations usually have a list of good lawyers who work within the locality. There is no reason for one to look for a lawyer who works in another state because apart from the distance issue, there is the danger of choosing someone who is not familiar with the laws covering bankruptcy in the state where the client resides.

Good lawyers are known for their work and competence. When choosing an attorney, it is advisable that one not only checks their directories but also look for advice from people who matter. These people can be friends and colleagues who have hired the services of a good lawyer before. For those who know lawyers, they can seek their expert advice in getting recommendations on some of their competent colleagues.

When looking for a lawyer who works at a law firm, it is recommended that one goes for a law firm which is known to deal with majorly bankruptcy cases. The law firm should also be large and have enough lawyers attend to their client needs effectively. The danger of getting someone from a small law firm is that the lawyer could be having more workload compared to one who works at a larger firm.

They say lawyers are very expensive and this could be true depending on how one chooses theirs. There are lawyers whose fees range from friendly charges to cost-prohibitive ones. Just because a lawyer is expensive does not mean that their services are top-notch. One should create a fair plan of payment with their client before they are hired. The lawyer should also consider that the client is in debt and therefore make a reasonable plan for them.

One should ask him or herself whether they are comfortable working with their lawyer-to-be. The foundation of good legal representation lies in a client-lawyer relationship which is founded on both trust and confidence. The financial situation of a client is something they need to comfortably discuss with their lawyer. As such, the lawyer has to be there to guide one through the crisis in their life.

Client needs should be placed first by the lawyer they opt for. If a lawyer charges for every consultation, including the initial one, it is prudent to look for another attorney. A good lawyer should be ready to give free legal advice and not necessarily charge for every meeting he or she has with their client.

Rebuilding the financial life of a client after filing for bankruptcy is important. A good bankruptcy attorney should be able to equip his or her clients with tools that will help them find good lenders or the mechanisms on how to pay their debts effectively.
